How to get compensation for a delayed or cancelled Ryanair flight?

Can I get compensation for Ryanair´s flight disruption?

Yes, according to European regulation EC 261/2004. Depending on some conditions you might be entitled up to 600€.

If your Ryanair flight was delayed 3 hours or more on arrival at your destination or if you suffered a cancellation without any prior notice this means that you might be eligible to claim compensation of up to €600 to the airline.

When you bought that ticket you never imagined what you would go through to reach your destination, right?

It doesn’t matter if Ryanair is a low-cost airline. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you have the same right to claim financial compensation as when travelling on a non-low cost airline.

Ryanair Flight Delay Compensation

Unless your flight delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond Ryanair’s control, you may be entitled to compensation for your flight if you arrived more than 3 hours late at your destination

The amount of compensation you can expect to receive depends on the distance of the flight, not the amount of money you paid for your ticket.

  • For short distance (under 1500km) flight delays passengers are due 250€ in compensation;

  • For medium distance (between 1500 km and 3500 km) flights they are due 400€;

  • For long-distance (over 3500km) flights they can receive 600€ in compensation.

Also know that Ryanair may claim extraordinary circumstances to justify the delay, which, according to the European Union regulation EC 261/04, prevents you to receive financial compensation.

But be warned: there are situations that are abusively considered extraordinary circumstances by airlines.

Therefore, our advice is to check on your own and with the airline as to the reason for the flight delay. Then check here if you are entitled to compensation and what the total amount to receive.

Ryanair Flight Cancellation Compensation

As with delays, compensation payments for cancelled flights will only occur if the cancellation was not caused by extraordinary circumstances.

In addition, and among other criteria that must be met, Ryanair will have to pay you if you were notified of the cancellation less than 14 days before the flight departs.

No airline likes to pay financial compensation for delays or cancellations and Ryanair is no exception.

The most common is for airlines to claim extraordinary circumstances to justify flight disruption.

Whether due to not knowing their Air Passenger Rights or  due to fear of facing an airline alone, the majority of passengers who have suffered a delay or cancellation of a flight choose not to proceed with the request for financial compensation.

Well, I have good news for you: you don’t have to face Ryanair alone. I use the Aireclaim service whenever I have a delayed or cancelled flight.

EU regulation EC 261/2004

Under the european regulation EC 261/2004 an air passenger is protected with Air Passenger Rights. You can read all about it here in our blog and be prepared for future situations.

Airlines often attribute extraordinary circumstances as a reason for their flight to be delayed or even to cancel it without having communicated it in advance. Here at Aireclaim´s Blog we will help you understand exactly what extraordinary circumstances are and how they can prevent you from claiming financial compensation for your flight.

And did you know that if you had a flight problem over the last 3 years (depending on the country), you can still get your flight compensation? These and many more rules can be found here on our blog. For full information on air passenger´s rights, please click here

FAQs About Flight Compensation

Sometimes it depends on whether the weather conditions meet the definition of “extraordinary circumstances” under EU 261.

Our team will analyse your specific case and help you understand if you still qualify for flight compensation, even when the airline blames the delay on bad weather.

You can still claim your flight delay compensation if:

  • The initial delay caused you to miss your connecting flight.
  • Your final arrival at the destination was more than 3 hours late.
  • Both flights were part of the same booking.
