What is a missed connection compensation?

A missed connection occurs when your initial Lufthansa flight arrives late or is cancelled, causing you to miss your onward flight booked under the same confirmed reservation.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, you may qualify for Lufthansa missed connection compensation if:

  • Your flights were booked under a single reservation
  • You had a confirmed booking
  • You presented yourself at check-in on time (or at least 45 minutes before departure if no time was indicated)
  • You were travelling on a publicly available fare
  • Your final arrival was delayed by more than 3 hours
  • The disruption was not caused by extraordinary circumstances

Compensation is calculated based on the total journey distance, not the ticket price.

If Lufthansa re-routed you and you still arrived more than 3 hours late, compensation may still apply.

What are considered extraordinary circumstances according to Lufthansa?

Lufthansa is not required to pay compensation if the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

According to Lufthansa and EU261, these may include:

  • Severe weather conditions
  • Political instability
  • Security risks
  • Strikes by third parties (e.g., airport staff or air traffic control)
  • Unexpected flight safety shortcomings

However, the airline must demonstrate that the event was truly beyond its control and that reasonable preventive measures were taken.

Operational issues such as internal crew shortages or aircraft rotation problems are not automatically considered extraordinary. Each case must be assessed individually.

What are my rights under EU 261/2004?

If you miss a Lufthansa connection due to a qualifying delay or cancellation, you may be entitled to:

  • Compensation of up to €600
  • Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity
  • Reimbursement of your ticket within 7 days (if you choose not to travel)
  • Return flight to the first departure point, where applicable
  • Care and assistance during waiting time

Care includes:

  • Meals and refreshments in proportion to waiting time
  • Hotel accommodation if necessary
  • Transport between the airport and hotel
  • Two free communications (calls or emails)

If the delay exceeds five hours, you may choose to withdraw from the journey and request a refund.

EU261 applies when:

  • Your flight departed from an EU Member State, or
  • Your flight departed from a third country and was operated by an EU airline such as Lufthansa arriving in the EU

These rights apply regardless of nationality.

Does Lufthansa pay missed flight compensation voluntarily?

Lufthansa does not automatically issue compensation payments for missed connections. Passengers must usually submit a formal claim.

In practice, the airline may:

  • Offer re-routing without mentioning compensation
  • Provide vouchers instead of monetary payment
  • Reduce compensation by 50% if re-routing meets legal timing thresholds
  • Reject claims citing extraordinary circumstances

Under EU261, compensation may be reduced by 50% if the alternative flight arrives:

  • Within 2 hours (for flights up to 1,500 km)
  • Within 3 hours (for flights between 1,500–3,500 km)
  • Within 4 hours (for flights over 3,500 km)

If your Lufthansa missed connection claim was rejected, this does not automatically mean you are not eligible. Many refusals require deeper legal review.

We assess your case and handle the claim process on your behalf.

✅ 90% success rate

✅ Legal team ready to act

✅ No upfront fees

Tip: Even if you accepted re-routing, you may still be entitled to monetary compensation if your arrival delay exceeded legal thresholds.

More about Lufthansa

Lufthansa is Germany’s national airline and a founding member of the Star Alliance. It operates major hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, connecting short-haul European routes with long-haul intercontinental flights.

Due to hub-based operations and tight transfer windows, missed connections can occur when inbound flights are delayed. Even a relatively short delay on the first leg may lead to a missed onward flight.

If your entire journey was booked under one reservation and you reached your final destination 3 hours or more late, your case may qualify under EU261 — regardless of whether Lufthansa provided assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lufthansa Missed Connection Claims

Yes. Rebooking does not cancel your right to compensation. If you arrived at your final destination 3 hours or more later than originally scheduled, you may still qualify for up to €600 under EU Regulation 261/2004. Compensation depends on the cause of the delay and total flight distance, not on whether alternative transport was provided.

Lufthansa must legally demonstrate that the disruption was caused by events truly beyond its control and that all reasonable measures were taken to avoid the delay. Technical faults or internal crew issues usually do not qualify. If your claim was rejected, a legal review can determine whether the refusal complies with EU261.

Compensation for long-haul missed connections can reach €600 if the arrival delay at your final destination exceeds 3 hours and the disruption was within the airline’s responsibility.
