What is a missed connection compensation?

A missed connection occurs when your first flight is delayed or cancelled, causing you to miss your next flight, even if you arrived at the airport on time.

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, you may be entitled to compensation if:

  • The flights were part of the same booking
  • The missed connection caused you to arrive at your final destination more than 3 hours late
  • The disruption wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances

Example:

You booked a flight from Madrid to Berlin with a stop in Paris, all under one ticket. Your flight from Madrid to Paris was delayed by 2 hours, making you miss your connection to Berlin. You arrived in Berlin 5 hours later than planned → Eligible for up to €400

When are you eligible to claim?

To qualify for missed connection compensation under EU261/2004, all of the following must apply:

  • Your flight departed from the EU or was operated by an EU-based airline
  • You booked both flights under the same reservation (single ticket)
  • The missed flight was caused by delay, cancellation, or denied boarding of a previous leg
  • You arrived at your final destination 3 or more hours later
  • The disruption was not due to extraordinary circumstances

What are extraordinary circumstances?

Airlines may avoid paying compensation if they prove the delay or cancellation was due to events outside their control.

Examples of extraordinary circumstances:

  • Airport strikes (non-airline staff)
  • Natural disasters (volcanic ash, floods, etc.)
  • Severe weather (e.g., hurricanes, heavy snow)
  • Political unrest or security risks

These DO NOT count:

  • Technical problems with the aircraft
  • Crew shortages or mismanagement
  • Operational errors or scheduling failures

At Aireclaim, we scrutinize these claims to challenge invalid rejections. Most airline excuses are not valid under EU261.

How much can you claim?
