Do I qualify for Ryanair strike compensation?

You qualify if your Ryanair flight was cancelled or delayed by at least three hours at your final destination due to a Ryanair staff strike; your departure airport is located in the EU (or you were on a Ryanair flight arriving in the EU as an EU carrier); and the strike involved Ryanair’s directly employed pilots, cabin crew, or ground handling staff on Ryanair’s direct payroll.

Ryanair is an Irish carrier and therefore an EU carrier subject to EU261. The airline operates across more than 40 European countries from bases in Ireland, Spain, Poland, Italy, Portugal, and beyond.

Real-world example: DUB to BCN, 1,471 km, EU261 Band 1 (€250)

A passenger on Ryanair from Dublin Airport (DUB) to Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) covers approximately 1,471 km, placing the route in Band 1 (under 1,500 km). A strike-related cancellation or delay of three or more hours entitles each passenger to €250 under EU261. Ryanair also operates from many EU bases; a strike affecting a Ryanair flight from Madrid (MAD) to Lisbon (LIS), approximately 503 km, would similarly yield €250 per passenger.

Your rights under EU Regulation 261/2004

EU261 gives Ryanair passengers the same three layers of protection as all EU carriers.

Right to care

From the moment Ryanair confirms a disruption, the airline must provide meals and drinks in proportion to your waiting time, two free communications, and hotel accommodation with transport if an overnight stay is required. Ryanair has been criticised by regulators across multiple EU countries for failing to adequately communicate these care rights at the gate.

Right to a full refund or rerouting

Ryanair must offer: a full ticket refund within seven days; the earliest possible rerouting to your destination; or rerouting at a later date of your choosing. If Ryanair cannot provide equivalent transport, it must also cover reasonable costs of alternative means of reaching your destination.

Financial compensation

On top of care and rerouting, you are entitled to the fixed cash payment set out in EU261 based on the great-circle distance of your original flight. Ryanair may reduce this by 50% only if it reroutes you within the prescribed arrival time tolerances.

When can you claim Ryanair strike compensation?

The claim is valid when: the flight was operated by Ryanair; it departed from an EU airport or was a Ryanair flight arriving in the EU; the cause of disruption was a Ryanair staff strike; and the cancellation or delay resulted in you arriving three or more hours late at your final destination.

The limitation period for Ryanair EU261 claims depends on the jurisdiction of departure: Ireland allows six years; Spain, three years; Italy, ten years. AireClaim applies the most favourable limitation period for each passenger.

When can you NOT claim Ryanair strike compensation?

There are situations where Ryanair can legitimately withhold compensation.

ATC and airport staff strikes

Ryanair frequently uses ATC strikes, particularly in France, as an extraordinary circumstances defence for widespread pre-emptive cancellations. When Ryanair cancels a flight before an ATC strike begins, or cancels a flight on a route not directly affected by ATC restrictions, this defence may not hold. Each cancellation should be assessed individually.

14-day advance notice

If Ryanair cancelled your flight and informed you 14 or more days before departure, you are not entitled to compensation. However, you retain the right to a full refund or rerouting.

True extraordinary circumstances

Genuine meteorological events, security emergencies, bird strikes causing aircraft damage, and similar events beyond Ryanair’s control and reasonable avoidance can legitimately remove the compensation obligation.

Should you accept a Ryanair´s voucher or insist on cash?

Ryanair has a documented history of offering non-refundable flight vouchers to disrupted passengers instead of EU261 cash compensation. Under EU261, you are legally entitled to receive the statutory payment in cash or by bank transfer. A Ryanair voucher is not a valid settlement of the EU261 entitlement unless you explicitly and freely agree to accept it as such.

Ryanair’s vouchers expire and are redeemable only on Ryanair. AireClaim will never accept a voucher in lieu of cash compensation without your express written authorisation.

How much Ryanair strike compensation can you claim?

As Ryanair is primarily an intra-European short-haul carrier, most claims fall in the under 1,500 km or 1,500 km to 3,500 km bands. Ryanair does not commonly operate routes that exceed 3,500 km from EU departure points.

Does Ryanair pay strike compensation voluntarily?

Ryanair’s record on voluntary compensation payment is among the worst of any major European carrier. The airline routinely invokes extraordinary circumstances for disruptions caused by its own staff strikes, a defence that courts across the EU and Ireland have repeatedly rejected.

In 2018 and subsequent years, Ryanair faced regulatory action in multiple countries, including formal warnings from the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), the Spanish AESA, and the Italian ENAC, for failing to meet EU261 obligations. AireClaim has successfully recovered compensation from Ryanair for thousands of passengers across these disputes.

More about Ryanair

Ryanair Holdings plc is an Irish low-cost carrier founded in 1984, headquartered in Swords, County Dublin. It is the largest European airline by passenger numbers, having transported over 183 million passengers in financial year 2023. Ryanair operates a fleet of over 500 Boeing 737 aircraft and serves more than 230 airports across 40 European countries.

The airline is structured as a group comprising Ryanair DAC (the primary Irish entity), Ryanair UK, Buzz (Poland), Lauda Europe (Austria), and Malta Air, all operating under the Ryanair brand across the group’s multiple AOCs.

How to claim Ryanair strike compensation, step by step

Step 1: Colect your evidence

Save your Ryanair booking confirmation, boarding pass (digital or physical), and any Ryanair emails or SMS messages about the disruption. Note the cancellation reason Ryanair gave at the airport or in its communications.

Step 2:  Check whether the cause was a Ryanair strike

Verify from Ryanair’s communications or media reports on the day of travel whether the disruption was caused by Ryanair pilots, cabin crew, or ground staff. AireClaim’s team monitors Ryanair strike calendars to assist with this verification.

Step 3:  Submit through AireClaim

Enter your Ryanair flight reference in AireClaim’s claim portal. The system calculates your exact entitlement, drafts a formal EU261 demand, and submits it to Ryanair.

Step 4: Track Ryanair’s response

Ryanair has a legal obligation to respond and pay within a reasonable period. AireClaim monitors all claim responses and escalates to the IAA, AESA, ENAC, or the relevant national body if Ryanair refuses or delays payment.

Step 5: Receive your payment

When Ryanair pays, AireClaim transfers the net compensation to you. The success fee is deducted only on successful recovery.

FAQ about Ryanair strike compensation

The 2018 pilot strikes took place in July, August, and September 2018, affecting passengers in Ireland, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Limitation periods for those disruptions have passed in most jurisdictions. However, if you are based in Italy (ten-year limitation), it may be worth checking. Contact AireClaim to confirm your specific jurisdiction and whether a claim is still actionable.

No. Irish and European courts, including the Irish High Court and courts in Germany, Spain, and Belgium, have consistently held that Ryanair’s own pilot strikes do not constitute extraordinary circumstances under EU261. The extraordinary circumstances defence requires that the event was both unavoidable and outside the carrier’s reasonable control; an internal industrial dispute over pay and conditions fails this test.

A full refund satisfies the right to a refund under EU261 but does not extinguish the separate right to financial compensation. If you chose a refund, you are still entitled to the fixed compensation amount unless the cancellation was notified more than 14 days in advance or another exemption applies.

If the replacement flight arrived at your final destination less than two hours late (routes under 1,500 km), less than three hours late (routes 1,500 km to 3,500 km), or less than four hours late (routes over 3,500 km) compared to your original scheduled arrival, Ryanair can reduce the compensation by 50%. If the delay at arrival exceeded these thresholds, the full amount is due.

If your Ryanair flight was on a separate ticket from a connecting flight on another carrier, EU261 claims are assessed flight by flight. The Ryanair disruption and its consequences are evaluated independently from the connecting carrier’s obligations. If the itinerary was on a single ticket with connecting flights included, the regulations are more complex and AireClaim can advise on your specific situation.

No. EU261 compensation rights are identical regardless of your ticket tier, seat assignment, or ancillary purchases. The fixed amounts based on route distance apply equally to all passengers on the disrupted flight.

Accepting a voucher from Ryanair can constitute a settlement of your EU261 claim if the acceptance is accompanied by a clear waiver statement. If you clicked “accept voucher” without being presented with a waiver of your legal rights, the validity of the settlement may be contested. AireClaim can review the specific communications you received and advise on whether your statutory claim remains open.
